Today, I finally planted the Asparagus crown that I received from Johnny’s Seeds. After soaking the crowns overnight, I planted them, confident in my preparations.
In the past, I’d attempted to grow Asparagus when we first moved into this house. Unfortunately, the plot of land chosen did not suit the plant well, leading to poor growth. This time, two different sites were meticulously prepared for planting. The first, a dry area by the chicken coop fence, offers decent sunlight and the dryness Asparagus plants, being root plants, prefer.
I’ve also dedicated a separate, raised bed solely for Asparagus growth.
In addition to the crowns, I got Asparagus seeds called UC-152 F2 from Victory Seed. Although it sounds like a hybrid, it’s an open-pollinated F2 generation variety. I sowed these seeds yesterday, the 13th of April, 2024. Growing Asparagus from a seed isn’t a rushed process and it takes a careful gardener to nurture the plants. Patience is key here, knowing that three to four years will pass before harvesting is possible, but ensuring the plants are strong before planting in the garden will pay off in the end. Growing from seeds might even result in better growth since the roots have space to spread and aren’t disturbed.
Assuming all goes well, the seedlings will be ready for transplanting in about 10 to 12 weeks.
