Implementing a Fence Post for Tomato Support

Creating self-support for tomato plants

# Tomato Trellis

Constructing a trellis for tomatoes has been a plan of mine for a while. The two types of tomatoes — determinate and indeterminate — have different needs.

Determinate tomatoes, commonly the Roma type, are often used for canning. Their growth pattern — a single, productive burst before dying off — is attractive for commercial use given its labor efficiency.

However, home growers usually prefer indeterminate tomatoes due to their prolonged fruit-bearing period. The challenge here is supporting these plants as they can become notably tall and heavy.

In a video by Charles Dowding, I saw an ingenious tomato support technique using string. This inspired me to create something similar.

My first step was to erect two fence posts and connect them with iron wires. I then tied one end of the twine to the wire, the other end attaching to a stick which was buried next to the planted tomato. String

The tomato plant’s roots within the repurposed milk carton pot are thriving. This cost-effective method also provides an excellent growing space for tomatoes in grow tents.

# Row Cover

With colder days predicted in Chicago, where nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to around 36 degrees, I’m covering the grow area for protection. Although the fabric reduces sunlight by 15%, the level of protection provided is worth this minimal light loss.
