Transplanting Pea Seedlings: Observations and Lessons Learned

Transplanting Pea Seedlings: Observations and Lessons Learned

I transplanted peas from a deep cell to outside today. Records show I planted them on 2/10, so this is about four weeks later. Here are some quick observations:

  • I soaked the tray with water first; this made the task of removing the seedlings significantly easier with minimal breakage.

  • Because the seedlings are a bit older, and peas tend to grow much faster than sweet peas, the root system has developed much better. It seems that sweet peas grow less vigorously compared to the two types of peas I’ve sown. Could I have waited a bit longer for the sweet peas?

  • I’ve noticed that the root system is quite dense. I don’t think I should have waited any longer, as it would have led to root binding.

  • In hindsight, I don’t think I would purchase this deep root cell flat again. Instead, I would prefer to use bio-degradable pots - preferably deeper ones - for any peas in the future.
